| FUNNY CARTOONS | |||
| A31 | teen to adult | ||
| Taught by New Yorker Magazine cartoonist Marshall Hopkins, this course will focus on the "gag cartoon." These distilled jokes are the humorous haiku poems of the art world and are often the first things read in magazines and newspapers. The cartooning process is an excellent venue for self-expression and the investigation of ideas social and political and bizarre. In class we will cover the complete cartooning process, from sketchbook doodles to finished pieces. In hands-on workshops we will learn about drawing tools, composition, storytelling, character development, dialogue, and various techniques for coming up with jokes. We will also check in for inspiration with Charles Addams, Gary Larson, Roz Chast and many others, and students will work through critiques, class discussions, and boatloads of drawing to polish a keen wit and create stacks of hilarious cartoons. A materials list is available from the office. Start-up supplies will cost approximately $35. |

| ADVANCED DRAWING | |||
| A91 | 16 to adult | ||
| We will draw both from the model (5 classes) and a still-life (4 classes) using charcoal or pencil, with a focus on composition, form and scale. Students may work the scale they prefer; large or small. We will work to become aware of the many relationships in a set up and in each drawing, so that the form and the measurements are accurate. We will draw the set up in the room so that space is achieved in the work and therefore students will learn to see and have a command of the medium in achieving space. There will be a critique at the end of each class. Model's fees are included. Prerequisite: prior instruction and practice in drawing. A materials list is available from the office. |
