Our 2007 Appeal Message:
The County Planning Department released its Housing Needs Assessment that documents a lack of local housing options in every price range, but especially hard-hit are the families that turn to us for help. Young families just starting jobs and families and desperately want to own a home in Tompkins County.  The elderly are impacted by rising property taxes and trying to keep their homes in safe repair.  We help all these people, but options are few and waiting lists are long.

The County’s needs assessment tells us what we already experience through our long waiting lists…more housing options are needed now and will be needed in the coming years in Tompkins County.

It is Better Housing’s role to help meet this need.  Your gift to Better Housing will help provide housing solutions:

·       Funding for community reinvestment. — Private funds to make community reinvestment happen become increasingly important as government funding decreases.

·       Services - Such as counseling, volunteer management, and program oversight.

·       Education – Meeting with community leaders, service groups, congregations, and legislators to share what we have learned and encourage new partnerships.

·       Research – Staying on top of best practices from around the state and around the country and bringing the very best thinking in housing solutions home to Tompkins County.

·       Advocacy – Maintaining regular contact with the agencies, leaders, and funders who influence the ongoing health and well being of affordable housing in Tompkins County.

Volunteers occasionally help us with a number of activities. Small crews have assisted with landscape cleanup and small repairs at many of our sites; others have helped with demolition or painting. Many of these opportunities are seasonal. We also welcome those who would like to provide educational programs or entertainment for the seniors who live in the rental buildings we manage, or even just answering the phone in the office.  Please see our wish list for current opportunities.
